  1. The organized military use of women on a
  2. large scale, a 20th-century development.
  3. First, women replaced men in factories, on
  4. farms, and in noncombat tasks during wartime;
  5. they are now found in combat units in many
  6. countries, including the USA, Cuba, the UK,
  7. the USSR, and Israel. The USA has a separate
  8. Women's Army Corps (WAC), established 1948,
  9. which developed from the Women's Army
  10. Auxiliary Corps (WAAC); but in the navy and
  11. air force women are integrated into the
  12. general structure. There are separate nurse
  13. corps for the three services. In Britain
  14. there are separate corps for all three
  15. services: Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC)
  16. created 1949 to take over the functions of
  17. the Auxiliary Territorial Service,
  18. established 1938 - its World War I equivalent
  19. was the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC);
  20. Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) 1917-19
  21. and 1939 onwards, allowed in combat roles on
  22. surface ships from 1990; and the Women's
  23. Royal Air Force (WRAF) established 1918 but
  24. known 1939-48 as the Women's Auxiliary Air
  25. Force (WAAF). There are also nursing
  26. services: Queen Alexandra's Royal Army
  27. Nursing Corps (QARANC) and Naval Nursing
  28. Service, and for the RAF Princess Mary's
  29. Nursing Service.
